History

Our firm has been practising in the local area in one guise or another for nearly 350 years! We have grown over the years through a combination of organic growth, merger and acquisition including names such as Tinsdill, Hollinshead & Moody in Tunstall, Sproston Slaney & Swann in Newcastle, Challinor & Shaw in Leek and N A Whieldon & Co in Sandbach. In 1991 it all came together under the name of THM Tinsdills and in 1999 we became Tinsdills Solicitors.

Today we are one of the area’s most experienced and knowledgeable law firms with offices in Hanley, Leek, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Sandbach. We offer a broad range of legal services for individuals and for business including: Family Law, Wills, Trust and Probate, Personal Injury and Compensation, Residential Property, Agriculture, Company and Commercial and Employment Law.

1580

Leek

William Challinor established the 1st legal practice.

1710

Leek

Thomas Parker

Thomas Parker who practiced law at the firm became the Lord Chief Justice. Later in 1718 Thomas Parker became Lord Chancellor.

1760

Challinor and Badnall move to 10 Derby Street (our Leek office today.)

1765

Before Hanley

Hollinshead and Moody were located in Tunstall – a reference to them providing a deed for the purchase of some land by Thomas Wedgwood, William Lockett, William Stonier, Joseph Smith and Matthew Maer dated December 3rd 1765.

1850

Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens consulted Mr Challinor regarding the local background to his novel ‘Bleak House’.

1878

Challinor & Shaw offices

Becomes Challinor & Shaw offices as Thomas Shaw is brought in as a partner.

1884

Magistrates regularly used the court room in our Leek office.

1939

Home Guard

10 Derby Street became headquarters for the home guard.

1941

Around Newcastle-under-Lyme

Messrs Sproston & Son became Sproston, Slaney & Swann.

1951

10 Derby Street's Building

10 Derby Street listed a Grade II protected building.

1975

Around Hanley

Hollinshead & Moody merged with Tinsdill Solicitors to become Tinsdill, Hollinshead & Moody.

1975

Challinor & Shaw merges with Tinsdills, Hollinshead & Moody.

1991

In Hanley

Tinsdills, Hollinshead & Moody and Challinor & Shaw merged with Sproston, Slaney and Swan at 3 King Street, Newcastle to become THM Tinsdills – gave us Newcastle branch.

2007

Leek

Sandbach Branch

THM Tinsdills merged with NA Wieldon & Co at 47 High Street Sandbach and became Tinsdills Solicitors. The Newcastle office moved to Marsh Parade and Hanley office moved from Broad Street to Hays House – gave us Sandbach branch.

2010

Derby Street Building

Tinsdills Solicitors celebrates 250 years of legal practice from 10 Derby Street.

2015

Tinsdills Solicitors becomes Tinsdills Solicitors LTD.

2019

Tinsdills Expansion

Tinsdills acquired some of the work and employees from a fellow Staffordshire based law firm, Grindeys Solicitors, in the areas of Corporate Law, Commercial Property, Dispute Resolution and Wills, Trusts and Probate.
